New York Is Open

Hello world,

New York City is open for business this Labor Day Weekend. Last weekend this time the subway system was shut down and people were settling inside with a few good movies and some just to pray that hurricane Irene would go away. But what a difference a week makes. This weekend people are out and about enjoying the good weather. Above is just a few scenes around the city. Don’t forget the big West Indian Day Parade on Eastern Parkway on Monday, September 5. Have a great Labor Day Weekend.

She’s Here- Hurricane Irene Is Here!

Irene Effects

Irene Effects

Hurricane Irene is here. It is about 7:45am now and I just captured this picture in Brooklyn, New York. Irene is not playing with us – she is serious. In about 1hr she will hit Brooklyn. The picture above was taken by my camera phone. Be safe everybody. I’ll see if I can get more photographs later. Be careful how you travel today. Even if it looks like all is well- be careful.   In the area of Brooklyn closest to Jamaica Bay and Kennedy airport, the rain is really pounding on the windows right now.  A few branches have been broken off and I saw one power line dangling. One of the good things is we can see a little daylight, so we can check for leaks and make sure we charge up phones and so on. Be safe!

No Keys to the City of New York for Irene

<Hello world,

Unless you were in the supermarket today, you would have no idea a hurricane was coming to New York. People were going and coming from work, in the night I saw people dressed for party, and life seemed normal. Maybe they have no idea what the other people are so concerned about. They’re probably saying, “who is Irene and why is she coming to America? Perfect Storm? No such thing. As one who experienced a hurricane with winds of over 150mph, I know Irene will not receive a warm welcome. There will be no keys to the City of New York for Irene. Instead she will be met at the shore line with sand bags, chairs, pillows, and that will be the end of that.

Hurricane Irene and Disaster Preparedness

Hello world,

Hurricane Irene is on her way to New York City, but before she gets to New York she will be passing a number of cities on the way. Everyone needs to take it seriously. if you have travel plans please call your airline carrier. I experienced a severe hurricane and it is really scary. Please heed the warnings and make sure you are prepared.

Preparedness must not just be for the days of the hurricane but for days after. In New York City we are not used to hurricanes even though many New Yorkers might have experienced hurricanes whether on vacations or whether living elsewhere. Be prepared. Check for working flashlights. Get a battery operated radio. Keep a corded phone – don’t depend on cell phones only. I remember 9-11 when there was no cell phone service. Have canned foods like sardines and get the ones that you lift to open. Have bread, crackers, power bars. Make sure you have important documents in a plastic bag or plastic case so they don’t get wet. Above all have some cash on hand (even $100). ATM’s might not be working and that won’t help you.
