Animal Kingdom to Rule The Kingdom in Belmont Stakes 2011
Today is the 143rd running of the Belmont Stakes, the third leg of thoroughbred horse racing triple crown. We have not come close to a triple crown winner in recent years, and of course this year is no exception. Nonetheless, if you are a horse racing fan, this event, the Belmont Stakes is a must for you whether there is potential for a triple crown winner or not. So who are the big name horses and who could upset the pundits in Elmont, Long Island, today?
I am a big horse racing fan. I used to live near to a horse race track and I loved horses. Did you know that we get the expression “horse power” from the power and speed if horses. It is absolutely amazing the power of these animals. Anyway, this is how I believe it will go. We have the Derby winner, Animal Kingdom, we have the Preakness winner, Shackleford, and then we have the others in the field. The others are not to be overlooked. So keep your eyes on these horses for an upset. They are Mucho Macho Man, Master of Hounds, Brilliant Speed, and Nehro.
Mucho Macho Man, finished very strongly in the Kentucky Derby and I believe he will be better suited by the distance in the Belmont Stakes. Look out for Master of Hounds, who is a late finisher as well and also will relish the extra distance. Brilliant Speed did not live up to his name in his last outing, but don’t ignore him because of this. He does have speed and stamina working in his favor. If you are looking for an upset and a long shot- go with Brilliant Speed. In the group of “outsiders” please consider Nehro. He came in second in the Preakness and is going to be very dangerous in the Belmont Stakes. He is well bred and I believe the finish line came up a little too soon for him in the Preakness
Now let’s look at the possible first and second favorites, Animal Kingdom and Shackleford, the Derby and Preakness winners respectively. Animal Kingdom should be installed as the favorite. The showing in The Preakness was a fluke. Expect Animal Kingdom to rule the animal kingdom today. Shackleford might be bothered by the distance, but could win. May the best horse wins!
